From Bharathiyar's life, 1906The Guru's Question
In 1906 Bharathiyar went to Calcutta for a great national gathering, and while there he called on Sister Nivedita, the disciple of Swami Vivekananda, who had given her life to India at her guru's word.
In the middle of their talk Nivedita asked, "Why did you not bring your wife with you?" Bharathiyar answered that it was not the custom for women to come to such meetings. Nivedita replied gently, "If a man will not give freedom to the woman in his own home, how will he win freedom for his country? Is not every woman a form of Shakti?"
That one question changed his life. He took Nivedita as his guru and dedicated his books of songs to her. His lines "Men and women shall live as equals in this land" and "We have come to hold office and to make the laws of the world" grew out of that meeting. He had always worshipped Parashakti as Mother; from then on he learned to see that Shakti in every woman.
