Abirami Andhadhi · 100

One hundred verses that Abirami Bhattar sang to the goddess Abirami of Thirukkadaiyur, with an opening prayer (kaappu) and a closing verse on the fruit of reciting it (nool payan). It is an andhadhi: the last word of each verse becomes the first word of the next, so the hundred verses form one unbroken garland.

Introduction

Abirami Andhadhi is one of the best-loved works of Tamil Shakta devotion. In one hundred verses in the kattalai kalitturai metre, Abirami Bhattar (Subramania Iyer, 18th century) praises the goddess Abirami, who dwells in the Amritaghateswarar temple at Thirukkadaiyur. The book begins with the word 'udhikkindra' (rising) and its hundredth verse ends with 'udhikkindrave', so the whole work closes into a garland.

In these verses the Mother is at once the Supreme who creates, sustains and dissolves the universe, and a mother and companion standing close to her devotee. Ideas from the Lalita Sahasranama, the worship of the Sri Chakra and the Devi Mahatmya flower here into sweet Tamil song. All through the book, Bhattar also opens his heart to the Mother about his faults and fears.

Even today, many homes recite Abirami Andhadhi on Thai Amavasai and on Fridays, and there is a popular belief that each verse brings its own particular blessing.

The life of Abirami Bhattar, Thirukkadaiyur tradition

The Earring That Became the Moon

From the tradition of Thirukkadaiyur. In Thirukkadaiyur there lived a brahmin named Subramania Iyer. He would sit in the shrine of the goddess Abirami, gazing at her face, lost in meditation. The townspeople mocked him as a madman.

One Thai Amavasai, the new-moon day of the month of Thai, King Serfoji of Thanjavur came to the temple. He asked Bhattar, who was absorbed in the radiant face of the Mother, 'What is today's lunar day?' To Bhattar the Mother's face was the moon, and he answered, 'Full moon.' The angry king ordered, 'If the moon does not rise tonight, you will be punished.'

That evening Bhattar sat above a fire on a platform held up by a hundred ropes and began to sing the Mother's praises, cutting one rope with each verse. When he sang the seventy-ninth verse, the Mother appeared, took off her earring and threw it into the sky. It shone as a full moon in the new-moon sky. The king fell at Bhattar's feet, and from that day he was called Abirami Bhattar. He went on to complete the hundred verses. That work is Abirami Andhadhi.
