Mahabharata, Mahaprasthanika ParvaYudhishthira and the Dog
From the Mahabharata, Mahaprasthanika Parva. At the end of their lives, the Pandavas and Draupadi set out towards the Himalayas. A dog followed them. One by one the others fell on the way, until only Yudhishthira and the dog remained.
Indra came with his chariot and said, "Come to heaven in your body, but there is no place for a dog there." Yudhishthira refused: "I do not want heaven if it means abandoning a creature that trusted me."
Then the dog took its true form as Dharma Deva and blessed his son. Yudhishthira desired dharma more than heaven itself, and that is why he is remembered as Dharmaraja.
