Valmiki Ramayana, Aranya KandaRama's Last Rites for Jatayu
From the Valmiki Ramayana, Aranya Kanda. When Ravana carried Sita away, the aged vulture king Jatayu fought him without a thought for his own life. Ravana cut off his wings and brought him down.
Searching for Sita, Rama found Jatayu lying in his blood. Jatayu told him that Ravana had gone south, and then died. Rama did not forget that this friend of his father had given his life for him.
Saying, "He is equal to my father Dasharatha to me," Rama himself built the pyre and performed the last rites as a son would. The Lord honoured the help of a bird as a debt owed to a father.
