Mahabharata, Shanti ParvaVishwamitra in the Great Famine
A story Bhishma tells Yudhishthira in the Shanti Parva of the Mahabharata. At the end of the Treta Yuga, no rain fell for twelve years, and a terrible famine came. The whole world wasted with hunger. Even the great sage Vishwamitra wandered for days without food.
Weak with hunger, one night he entered the hut of an outcaste on the edge of a village and tried to take the dog's meat kept there. The man woke and argued from dharma: 'Sage, this is not fit for you.' Vishwamitra argued that preserving life is also a duty.
He took the meat and was about to offer it first to the gods when Indra sent rain and ended the famine for the world.
Even the pride of birth and the austerity of a sage the whole world revered were tested by hunger. Avvaiyar does not exaggerate its power.
