Kondrai Vendhan

Kondrai Vendhan is 91 maxims in Tamil alphabetical order. A little longer than the lines of Aathichoodi, they teach family duty, farming, learning, worship and honesty in proverb-like form.

Introduction

The book takes its name from its invocation, which bows at the feet of the beloved son of the king who wears kondrai (Indian laburnum) flowers. That king is Shiva, and his son is Vinayaka.

Many of its lines have become everyday Tamil proverbs: "Mother and father are the first gods we know", "There is no temple greater than one's mother", "Cross the sea, if need be, to earn wealth", "What you do in the forenoon bears fruit by afternoon."

Where Aathichoodi gives a command, Kondrai Vendhan often gives the reason too: why parents are to be revered, why the plough is honoured, why learning is like sight. It sets out the foundations of Hindu household life in plain words: family duty, hospitality, non-harming and daily worship. A few lines reflect the social outlook of their time, and are best read in that setting.

From Tamil devotional tradition about Avvaiyar

How Vinayaka Carried Avvaiyar to Kailash

This story comes from Tamil devotional tradition about Avvaiyar. The saints Sundaramurthy Nayanar and Cheraman Perumal Nayanar set out for Mount Kailash, Shiva's abode. At that moment Avvaiyar was in the middle of her worship of Vinayaka.

Her heart raced: she longed to go with them. Tradition says Vinayaka told her, "Do not hurry. Complete your worship properly." Calmly and with full devotion, she finished her puja. The hymn she sang then is honoured as the Vinayagar Agaval, which begins "Seetha kalaba chenthamarai poompatha chilambu".

When she had finished, Vinayaka lifted her with his trunk and set her down on Kailash before the two saints arrived.

Avvaiyar, who taught "Do well whatever you do" and "Worship God every day", lived by her own words. The story's message is that God guides the one who does their duty fully and without panic.
