Mahabharata, Vana ParvaThe Python's Questions
From the Mahabharata, Vana Parva. During the exile, a great python seized Bhima in its coils. It was King Nahusha under a curse. Once he had held the throne of Indra, but he fell when in his pride he insulted the sages.
When Yudhishthira came searching for Bhima, the serpent questioned him: 'Who is a true brahmin? What is worth knowing?' Yudhishthira answered: 'One with truth, generosity, patience, good conduct, compassion and austerity is a brahmin, not by birth but by conduct.'
By those answers Nahusha was freed from his curse; he released Bhima and regained his divine form. One who fell through the evil of pride rose again through the words of dharma.
