Rig Veda, Book 1Indra and Vritra
From the Rig Veda. Vritra, a great serpent demon, coiled himself in the mountains and held back all the waters of the world. The clouds gave no rain, the rivers stopped flowing, and the world withered.
Indra drank the soma, took up the thunderbolt forged by Tvashtr, fought Vritra and struck him down. The waters he had imprisoned were set free.
The Rig Veda sings: 'Like lowing cows rushing to their calves, the waters ran to the sea.' Once the waters flowed, the world came back to life. The Veda itself sang that nothing happens without rain.
