Introduction

Inna Narpathu is one of the Eighteen Minor Works (Patinenkilkanakku), and tradition attributes it to the poet Kapilar. After an invocation come forty venba verses, and each verse names four innaa, things that bring pain, in a single breath. The refrain innaa ... aangu innaa ('painful ... and painful too') gives the book a rhythm that is easy to memorise.

The invocation says the first sorrow is failing to worship four deities: Shiva the three-eyed, Balarama of the palm banner, Vishnu who bears the discus, and Murugan who holds the spear. The verses that follow range over every part of life: an unjust king, debt, bad company, the lack of learning, empty pride, illness in old age, rain that fails in its season, singing to those who cannot hear music.

The lists look negative, but their purpose is positive. One who knows clearly what leads to sorrow can step around it in advance. For anyone who wishes to live by dharma the book stands like a row of warning signs along the road. Its companion, Iniyavai Narpathu, completes it by naming the things that bring sweetness.

From the Mahabharata (Vana Parva)

The Questions of the Yaksha

From the Mahabharata. Near the end of their exile in the forest, the Pandavas were tormented by thirst. Nakula went in search of water and found a clear lake. As he bent to drink, a voice rang out: "This lake is mine. Answer my questions first, then drink." Nakula ignored it, drank, and fell lifeless. Sahadeva, Arjuna and Bhima came looking for him, and each met the same fate.

At last Yudhishthira arrived. He was shaken to see his four brothers lying on the ground, yet when the voice spoke he did not rush. "Ask your questions," he said humbly, "and I will answer as far as my understanding reaches." The Yaksha asked one question after another.

"By giving up what does a man escape sorrow?" "By giving up anger," said Yudhishthira. "Who is truly happy?" "The one who has no debt, who does not wander in foreign lands, and who eats simple food in his own home." "What is the greatest wonder in the world?" "That every day creatures go to death, and still those who remain think they will live for ever."

Pleased, the Yaksha said, "I will restore one of your brothers. Whom do you choose?" Yudhishthira chose Nakula. The Yaksha was astonished: "Are not Bhima and Arjuna your greatest strength?" "My father had two wives," Yudhishthira replied. "As Kunti's son I am alive; let one son of Madri live too." Delighted by this fairness, the Yaksha revealed himself as Dharma himself, and restored all four brothers to life.

One who knows the roots of sorrow, such as debt, anger, restless wandering and injustice, stands firm in dharma. That same discernment is what Inna Narpathu sets out to teach.
