From the Valmiki Ramayana (Kishkindha Kanda)Jambavan Reminds Hanuman of His Strength
From the Valmiki Ramayana. The monkey army searching for Sita reached the shore of the southern ocean. Before them lay a hundred yojanas of sea. One by one the leaders said how far they could leap; none could cross the whole distance to Lanka.
Hanuman sat quietly apart. Great power lay within him, but he was not aware of it. Then the aged Jambavan came to him. He reminded Hanuman of his birth as the son of Vayu, the wind god, of the strength that was his by nature, and of how as a child he had leapt to seize the sun, thinking it a fruit. 'You can cross this ocean. Rise!' he said.
Jambavan's words woke the power inside Hanuman. He grew to the size of a mountain, leapt from Mount Mahendra, crossed the ocean and reached Lanka.
Hanuman's strength was the grain within; Jambavan's encouragement was the husk that let it sprout. Only together did that great deed come to life.
