Mahabharata, Vana ParvaYavakrita and the Dam of Sand
From the Mahabharata, Vana Parva. Yavakrita, son of the sage Bharadvaja, wanted all the Vedas to come to him without years of study under a teacher, and performed fierce penance for it. Indra came and said, "Learning comes only by studying with a guru," but Yavakrita would not listen.
One day on the bank of the Ganga, an old man was throwing sand into the river, handful by handful. "What are you doing?" asked Yavakrita. "Building a dam to cross the Ganga," he replied. Yavakrita laughed: "That is a useless effort!"
The old man said, "So is your effort to gain the Vedas without study," and revealed himself as Indra. Yavakrita saw his mistake. There is no road to knowledge except study.
