Akkam surukkael

Meaning

Do not short-measure grain.

Word by word

grain
do not short-measure, do not reduce

Explanation

Do not short-measure grain. In trade, cutting a measure may look like a small profit, but it destroys trust itself.

Grain is the basis of life. To cheat in it is like taking food from a hungry mouth. We must understand that even a single grain is precious.

Mahabharata, Vana Parva (traditional recensions)

One Grain in the Akshaya Patra

From the traditional recensions of the Mahabharata, Vana Parva. In the forest, Draupadi fed every guest from the Akshaya Patra given by the Sun; once she had eaten, it gave no more that day. One day after she had eaten, the sage Durvasa arrived with thousands of disciples and said, "We will bathe and return; let the meal be ready."

There was no food, and the sage's curse was certain. Draupadi called on Krishna with all her heart. Krishna came and said, "I am hungry; give me something." He ate a single bit of greens and one grain of rice stuck to the rim of the vessel, and said, "May the whole world be satisfied."

The sages bathing in the river suddenly felt full, and left without returning. If a single grain can fill the world, how great a wrong it is to short-measure grain!
