Srimad Bhagavatam, Ninth CantoRantideva's Hospitality
From the Srimad Bhagavatam, Ninth Canto. King Rantideva gave away all he had and lived in poverty with his family. Once, forty-eight days passed without food or water.
On the morning of the forty-ninth day, a little food and water came to them. Before he could eat, a brahmin guest arrived, and he gave him a share. Then came a hungry man, and then a man with his dogs, and he gave to them all. At last he gave even the remaining water to a man faint with thirst.
Then all those visitors revealed their true forms as the gods of the Trimurti. Rantideva, who fed others first even in hunger, asked only for devotion, and that is what he received.
