Kena UpanishadThe Yaksha and the Gods
From the Kena Upanishad. Once, by the grace of Brahman, the gods defeated the asuras. But they praised themselves: "This victory is ours, this glory is ours."
Then a mysterious Yaksha appeared before them. Agni went and boasted, "I can burn anything." The Yaksha placed a blade of grass and said, "Burn this." Agni could not. Vayu, who boasted he could blow anything away, could not even stir it.
When Indra went, the Yaksha vanished, and in its place appeared the goddess Uma. She revealed, "That was Brahman; your victory was its victory." That day the gods learned that what they boasted of as theirs was never theirs.
