Mahabharata, Vana ParvaKarna's Armour and Earrings
From the Mahabharata, Vana Parva. Karna was born with golden armour and earrings, and as long as he wore them no one could defeat him. After his noon worship of the Sun, his vow was never to refuse anyone who asked for anything.
To protect Arjuna, Indra came disguised as a brahmin and asked for them. Though the Sun had warned him in a dream, Karna did not refuse. He cut away the armour joined to his body and gave it.
Moved by his generosity, Indra gave him the Vasavi Shakti weapon in return. Because he did not hide even the gift that guarded his life, Karna still stands as the very image of giving.
