Explanation

In four examples, Avvaiyar tells us where the true excellence of each thing lies. Water is good because of the land it flows through. The worthy are known by their giving. Eyes are known by their unfailing compassion. A woman is known by the strength of her unbroken faithfulness. These are the marvels of the world.

The phrase 'the virtue of the eyes' is subtle. The beauty of an eye lies not in its shape but in the kindness that shows in it. Thiruvalluvar too says that eyes without compassion are not really eyes.

The heart of the verse is that the real beauty of each thing is not in how it looks but in the quality within it.

Valmiki Ramayana, Ayodhya Kanda

Anasuya Blesses Sita

From the Valmiki Ramayana, Ayodhya Kanda. Early in their exile, Rama, Sita and Lakshmana came to the hermitage of the sage Atri. Atri told Rama of the greatness of his wife Anasuya: when the world withered through ten years without rain, her austerities made fruits and roots grow and brought the Ganga to flow there.

The aged ascetic welcomed Sita with love. She praised Sita's resolve in following her husband into the forest, and counselled her on the greatness of a wife devoted to her husband.

Then she gave Sita, as gifts of affection, a garland that would never fade, garments, ornaments and fragrant unguents. Sita told her the story of her swayamvara, and Anasuya listened with delight. That evening Sita came before Rama wearing those gifts.

That evening, when Anasuya's compassion met Sita's faithfulness, shows two of Avvaiyar's marvels in one place.
