Thiruporur sthala history, the tradition of Chidambara SwamigalThe Murugan Hidden in the Palmyra Grove
From the tradition of Thiruporur. In the great war told in the Kanda Puranam, Murugan stood in the sky over this place and defeated the asuras, so the town was called Porur, 'the place of battle'. Over the centuries the old temple fell into ruin, and the image of Murugan was lost under the earth in a forest of palmyra palms.
In the seventeenth century a devotee named Chidambara Swamigal lived in Madurai and worshipped the goddess Meenakshi. One night the Mother appeared to him in a dream and said: 'To the north, near the sea, is a town called Porur. My son lies hidden there in a palmyra grove. Find him and build him a temple.'
The Swamigal walked the long road north and reached Porur. He dug at the place the Mother had shown him, and at the foot of a palmyra palm he found the image of Murugan. With the help of the townspeople he raised the temple again, and he sang many songs to the Lord. Chidambara Swamigal still has his own shrine at Thiruporur. The 'Kandappar who dwells in Thiruporur' whom every verse of this book salutes is this same Murugan.
