Explanation

The verse opens with the peacock's valour: it pecks a serpent and dances a fierce tandava. Then the same peacock humbly circles Shiva and praises his feet. Murugan is Shiva's son and also his teacher, and even his mount never fails to bow to Shiva.

Two stories meet in the line 'you carried the divine Guru and came happily to the millet field'. Because he taught the meaning of Om to his own father at Swamimalai, Murugan is called Gurunathan and Swaminathan. Yet this same Guru, out of love for Valli, took the forms of a hunter and an old man and wandered in her millet field. The one who stands at the summit of wisdom comes down to the simplicity of love.

In the later lines the poet asks for the blessings of family life: children, wife, mother, father, kin and wealth. Bhakti is not only renouncing the world; it is also living the householder's life fully, by the Lord's grace. The verse closes by saying this help is for those who surrender with the words 'I have no refuge but you'.

Kanda Puranam, the marriage of Valli

Murugan Seeks Valli in the Millet Field

From the Kanda Puranam. On Valli hill, Valli grew up as the daughter of Nambirajan, chief of the hunters. In a former birth she had been born as Vishnu's daughter and had done penance to marry Murugan. When she came of age she sat on a raised platform in the millet field, slinging stones to drive away the parrots and guarding the crop.

Murugan heard of her through Narada and came to the millet field in the form of a hunter to speak with her. When he heard the hunters coming, he stood there as a vengai tree. Later he came as an old Shaiva ascetic, ate honey and millet flour, and asked for water to drink. Valli led him to a mountain spring, but her heart still did not turn to him.

Then Murugan thought of his elder brother, Ganesha. Ganesha appeared as a wild elephant and charged towards Valli. In fright Valli clung to the old man. In that moment Murugan showed his true form and stood before her as the six-faced Lord on his peacock. Valli recognised him and bowed. Later Nambirajan gave Valli to Murugan in marriage with all due rites. The story shows that the Lord himself comes searching to take his devotee as his own.

To reflect on

Murugan, the Guru of all wisdom, came in humble forms for love's sake. Could you set aside your pride to draw closer to someone you love?
