understanding, nor conduct

Explanation

Without study, says Avvaiyar, there is neither true understanding nor good conduct. The last line of Kondrai Vendhan closes the book with the importance of learning.

Othal, study, is not only reading books; it is learning humbly from a teacher and reflecting on what one has learned. Learning gives understanding, and understanding gives conduct. Together they make a whole person.

Chandogya Upanishad

The Education of Upakosala

From the Chandogya Upanishad. A young man named Upakosala lived for twelve years as a student of the sage Satyakama Jabala, humbly tending his teacher's sacred fires. The other students finished their studies and went home, but the teacher had not yet taught Upakosala. Then the teacher went away on a journey.

Grieving, Upakosala stopped eating. Seeing his humility and devotion, the sacred fires themselves taught him: 'Life is Brahman; joy is Brahman; space is Brahman.'

When the teacher returned, he said, 'Your face shines like that of one who knows Brahman!' Then he taught him the full truth. For one who learned with humility and patience, understanding and conduct blossomed together.
