Thiruvilayadal Puranam; Thiruvathavurar PuranamJackals into Horses
From the Thiruvilayadal Puranam. Manikkavasagar, minister to the Pandya king, set out with the royal treasury's money to buy horses. On the way, at Thiruperunthurai, he met the Lord in the form of a guru and spent all the money on temple service.
When no horses arrived, the king was furious. Manikkavasagar was severely punished, and no one spoke up for him. Then the Lord turned jackals of the forest into horses and came himself as a horse trader to deliver them. But at night they turned back into jackals and ran off. The king's rage grew, and Manikkavasagar was made to stand on burning sand.
At once the Vaigai river rose in a great flood. The Lord came as a labourer to help repair the bank, and when the king struck him with a cane, the blow fell on every living being in the world. The king understood the truth and freed Manikkavasagar. When the king was angry, there was no human protector, but the Lord himself became his protection.
