Kaveri Mahatmya (Skanda Purana tradition)Agastya and the Kaveri
From the tradition of the Kaveri Mahatmya. When the southern land was parched, the sage Agastya came south carrying the Kaveri contained in his water pot. When he sat in meditation on the hills of Kodagu, the pot was set beside him.
Knowing that the south needed water, Ganesha came in the form of a crow and tipped the pot over. The Kaveri poured out and began to flow, and wherever she went, fields and villages flourished.
Even today the rice bowl of Tamil Nadu lies along the Kaveri. The Kaveri delta itself shows that life in a well-watered village is prosperity.
