Mahabharata, Adi ParvaEkalavya's Gift to His Teacher
From the Mahabharata, Adi Parva. Ekalavya, a young hunter, wished to learn archery from Drona, but Drona refused him. Undaunted, Ekalavya made a clay image of Drona in the forest, took it as his teacher, practised alone and became a great archer.
One day Drona and the Pandavas saw his skill and were amazed. When asked who his teacher was, he said, 'You are.' Remembering his promise to make Arjuna the greatest archer in the world, Drona asked for the thumb of his right hand as his teacher's fee.
Ekalavya cut it off and gave it without hesitation. He did not go back on his word to the one he had accepted as teacher. His steadfastness in standing by what he had learned is honoured to this day, even as the injustice done to him is remembered.
