Srimad Bhagavatam, Eleventh CantoWhat the Avadhuta Learned from the Fish
From the Srimad Bhagavatam, Eleventh Canto. King Yadu met a wandering avadhuta sage who was always full of joy, and asked him, "Where did you learn this peace?" The avadhuta replied, "I learned from twenty-four teachers in nature."
One of them was the fish. "Craving the taste of the little bait on the hook, the fish bites it, is caught and loses its life. In the same way, a person enslaved by the craving of the tongue is destroyed."
The avadhuta added, "One who has conquered the other senses but not the tongue has not conquered anything; one who has conquered the tongue has conquered all." The fish's end is a warning against the craving to overeat.
