Valmiki Ramayana, Bala KandaParashurama Lays Down His Wrath
From the Valmiki Ramayana, Bala Kanda. Parashurama, son of the sage Jamadagni, enraged at the kings who had killed his father, destroyed the kshatriyas twenty-one times. Afterwards he gave all the land he had won as a gift to the sage Kashyapa.
As Rama was returning to Ayodhya after marrying Sita, Parashurama confronted him on the way. Angry that Shiva's bow had been broken, he said, "String this bow of Vishnu, then fight me." Rama calmly took the bow and strung it.
Seeing Vishnu himself in Rama, Parashurama gave up his wrath and the power of his austerities. Ending the life that had made a trade of fighting, he went to Mount Mahendra to do penance. The warrior's final victory lay in laying down his arms.
