Mahabharata, Vana Parva (Nalopakhyana)Kali Enters King Nala
From the Mahabharata, Vana Parva, the story of Nala. Because Damayanti chose King Nala over the gods, Kali grew hostile. He vowed, "I will enter Nala and destroy him."
But Nala lived carefully on the path of dharma. Kali waited twelve years for one small lapse that would let him in. One day Nala performed his evening worship without first washing his feet. That small slip became Kali's doorway, and he entered Nala.
In Kali's grip, Nala gambled with his brother Pushkara and lost his kingdom, and was parted from Damayanti in the forest. Only after years of suffering did Kali leave him. So great was the price of giving the enemy one small opening.
