Beyond what is destined, no one can take happiness from another in this world. Even if you sail the flooding sea and come back ashore, what more does it give to the life that dwells in this body?

Explanation

Beyond what is destined, no one can take happiness from another. Even if you sail the flooding sea in search of wealth and come back to shore, Avvaiyar asks, what more does it give to the life that dwells in this body?

Happiness is not something we can pile up from outside. However much we gather, desire is never filled; as soon as one thing comes, the mind runs after the next.

So true contentment lies within. One who has learned to be glad with what they have does not need to cross the sea.

Mahabharata, Adi Parva; Srimad Bhagavatam, Book 9

Yayati's Borrowed Youth

From the Mahabharata, Adi Parva. King Yayati, married to Devayani, wronged her and was cursed by her father, Shukracharya, to become old at once. Shukracharya allowed one way out: if someone took his old age, Yayati could have their youth.

Yayati asked his sons. The elder ones refused. Only the youngest, Puru, gladly took on his father's old age, and Yayati enjoyed pleasures for a thousand years.

At last he understood: 'As fire grows when ghee is poured on it, desire grows the more it is fed; it is never quenched.' He gave Puru back his youth, crowned him king, and went to the forest to do penance.

A thousand years of pleasure did not bring Yayati contentment. It came only when he let desire go.

To reflect on

Have you ever thought 'I will be content once I have this', and then found contentment did not come even after you got it?
