From the Mahabharata (Vana Parva)Savitri and Satyavan
From the Mahabharata. Savitri, princess of Madra, chose as her husband Satyavan, son of King Dyumatsena, who had lost both his kingdom and his sight. Even when the sage Narada warned that Satyavan would die within a year, she did not change her mind.
Leaving the riches of the palace, she lived in a forest hut with her husband and his parents. She served her blind father-in-law and her mother-in-law, and filled that humble hut with love. In that poor dwelling, with her there, nothing was lacking.
The appointed day came. Satyavan went to cut firewood and died with his head in Savitri's lap. Yama, lord of death, carried away his life. Savitri followed Yama. Pleased by her words, full of dharma, Yama granted her boons: sight and kingdom for her father-in-law, sons for her own father. Last, she asked for sons born of Satyavan. Bound by his word, Yama returned Satyavan's life.
With the lady of the house at home, nothing is lacking, not even life itself.
