Srirangam temple traditionThe Question Ranganatha Asked
From the tradition of the Srirangam temple. When Kambar finished his Iramavataram, he decided that it must first be presented at Srirangam. Poets and devotees gathered in the hall before the shrine of Lord Ranganatha. That hall is still called the Kambar Mandapam.
Tradition says that when Kambar sang the passage in which Lord Narasimha destroys Hiranyakashipu, the Narasimha of the nearby Mettu Azhagiya Singar shrine roared aloud in approval.
While the presentation was going on, Ranganatha himself put a question to Kambar: "Have you sung of our Sadagopan?" Nammalvar's Thiruvaimozhi is the Tamil Veda, and an epic about the Lord was not complete until Nammalvar too was praised. At once Kambar sang a hundred verses on Nammalvar. That is the Sadagopar Andhadhi. Its opening verses of praise record the moment: "Namperumal, with overflowing love, asked: Have you sung of our Sadagopan?"
