From the Valmiki Ramayana (Yuddha Kanda)The Reign of Rama
From the Valmiki Ramayana. When the fourteen years of exile and the war in Lanka were over, Rama returned to Ayodhya with Sita and Lakshmana. Bharata, who had ruled from Nandigrama with Rama's sandals on the throne, ran to fall at his brother's feet. The three queen mothers embraced him in tears, and all Ayodhya was decked for celebration.
Vasishtha crowned Rama, and Rama reigned for a long age. Valmiki describes that reign in words of great sweetness: "While Rama ruled, no widow's lament was heard. There was no fear of serpents or disease. There were no thieves. The young did not die while the old still lived. All rejoiced in dharma. The trees were always in flower and fruit. The clouds rained in their season and the winds blew gently. People delighted in their own work and lived without greed."
Rama performed great sacrifices and gave cows and gold to the learned. He heard the grievances of the poor himself. Truth and justice were the foundations of his rule.
From that day to this, the people of India have used the words Rama Rajya to mean good government. Every sweetness Iniyavai Narpathu names, rain in its season, children free of illness, a life without debt, a people rejoicing in dharma, comes together in that single picture.
