From the Purananuru (poem 45, Kovur Kizhar)Kovur Kizhar Between Two Cholas
From the Purananuru. Nalankilli and Nedunkilli, both of the Chola line, became enemies. Nedunkilli shut himself inside the fort of Uraiyur, and Nalankilli laid siege to it with his army. Within, the people suffered hunger, and war could break out at any moment.
The poet Kovur Kizhar went to them and sang: "Neither of you wears the garland of palmyra flowers, nor the garland of neem. Both of you wear the garland of aathi. Both of you are of the Chola house. Whoever loses this war, it is your own house that loses, and both of you cannot win. This deed is unworthy of your line."
The palmyra was the emblem of the Cheras, the neem of the Pandyas, and the aathi of the Cholas. In a few words the poet showed how tragic it was for two who wore the same garland to destroy each other.
The Purananuru records how such counsel from Kovur Kizhar eased the enmity between the Cholas.
This poet, who stood in the middle of a siege and sang of peace, is proof that winning over those who are estranged is sweet.
