Explanation

The first sweetness is the nobility that never looks back at another man's wife. Valluvar calls this the true manliness that does not look at another's wife, and says it is not merely a virtue of the wise but their very conduct. A life in which the mind is mastered has no fear or guilt in it, and that is its sweetness.

The second is rain falling on green crops withering in drought. This image from the farmer's life is sweetness at its simplest and deepest. The third is the trumpeting of mountain-like elephants at the gate of a valiant king: the assurance that the land is strong and safe.

A person of good conduct, a field blessed with rain, a kingdom strong enough to protect: when the individual, the community and the land are all well, life is sweet.

From the Valmiki Ramayana (Kishkindha Kanda)

The Anklets Lakshmana Knew

From the Valmiki Ramayana. As Ravana carried Sita away through the sky, she saw a few vanaras on the Rishyamuka hill, tied some of her ornaments in her upper cloth and dropped them. Sugriva and his companions kept them safe.

Later, when Rama and Lakshmana met Sugriva, he brought out the ornaments. At the sight of them Rama was overcome with grief and tears. "Lakshmana, see whether these are Sita's," he said.

Lakshmana answered humbly: "Brother, I do not know these bracelets or these earrings. But these anklets I know well, for every day, as I bowed at my sister-in-law's feet, those were all I saw."

For fourteen years he had lived beside them in the same hermitage, yet he regarded his brother's wife as his mother and looked at nothing but her feet. Lakshmana's purity of conduct still stands as a measure in Indian tradition.

This is the highest form of what Poothanchendhanar calls the sweet nobility of never looking at another's wife.
