Introduction

'Alankaram' means ornament. Kandar Alankaram is an ornament made of words for Murugan. Where Kandar Anubhuti speaks of the inner experience in a few spare words, the Alankaram sings of it at length, in colour and in ringing sound. Mount Meru sways at the beat of the peacock's wings, the ocean splits at the flap of the rooster's wings, and Murugan's small feet rest on the peacock, on the heads of the gods and on the poet's own palm-leaf page.

At the same time the book speaks plainly to ordinary people. 'Share with the poor, even half a broken grain.' 'Will the wealth you buried follow you after death?' Verses such as 'Naal en seyum, vinai thaan en seyum', 'what can the day do, what can karma do', have given courage to devotees for generations.

The verses are in the kattalai kalitturai metre. The text follows the Project Madurai etext, with a few typing slips corrected against the reading in common use.

Life of Arunagirinathar, Thiruvannamalai tradition

Ganesha at the Gate of Arunai

From the tradition of Thiruvannamalai. In the great temple of Thiruvannamalai, where Arunagirinathar received Murugan's grace, there is a shrine of Ganesha just north of the gateway beneath the tower. Those who come there knock lightly on their temples as they bow. The opening prayer of Kandar Alankaram sings of this very Ganesha.

In the temple where his life was turned around, the poet first bows to the elder brother and then begins to string a garland of verses for the younger. This is the town where Murugan caught him as he fell from the tower, and where the Lord appeared from a pillar. It is fitting that the book begins at Arunai.
