Explanation

When the peacock spreads its plumes the very sky is covered; how can Yama's noose catch one sheltered under them? It is a beautiful image of protection.

From the tradition of Mylapore

The Mother who worshipped as a peahen

Once Uma's attention drifted from Shiva's teaching to the beauty of a dancing peacock. Shiva told her to be born as a peahen. In that form the Mother worshipped a Shiva linga under a punnai tree, scattering flowers. Pleased with her love, Shiva appeared and took her back. That place is Mylapore, where the Mother is Karpagambal and the Lord Kapaleeshvarar. The peacock's plumes recall the Mother's love too.
