Explanation

Having blamed Brahma in earlier verses, here he complains fondly: 'Why did you not give me four thousand eyes?' The longing to see the Lord has no limit.

From the Periya Puranam

Kannappar

Thinnan, a young hunter, saw the Shiva linga on the Kalahasti hill and was lost in love. One day he saw blood flowing from one eye of the linga; he gouged out his own eye with an arrow and fitted it there. The bleeding stopped. When the other eye began to bleed, he placed his foot on it as a marker and began to gouge out his other eye. Shiva appeared and caught his hand, crying, 'Stop, Kannappa!' He gave his very eyes to the Lord.
