Thaenenru paaken ruvamik konaamozhith theyva valli / Koanan renakkupa thaesiththa thonruntu kooravarroa / Vaananru kaalanru theeyanru neeranru mannumanru / Thaananru naanan rasireeri yanru sareeriyanrae.

Meaning

There is one thing the Lord of divine Valli, whose speech is too sweet to be compared even to honey or syrup, taught me that day. Can it be told? It is not sky, not wind, not fire, not water, not earth; it is not he, not I; it is not bodiless, and not embodied.

Explanation

The first two lines dwell on sweetness: Valli's speech is sweeter than honey or syrup. The last two lines then deny nine times over: not the five elements, not 'he' and not 'I', not bodiless and not embodied. Even the line between teacher and taught is denied. What remains cannot be named, and the poet's 'can it be told?' admits as much. It is the method of 'not this, not this' in its Tamil form.

Adi Shankara tradition, the Nirvana Shatkam

The Question 'Who Are You?'

From the Adi Shankara tradition. The young Shankara came to the banks of the Narmada seeking his guru, Govinda Bhagavatpada. From inside his cave the guru asked, 'Who are you?' Shankara answered in song: 'I am not the mind, nor intellect, nor ego, nor memory; not the ears, nor the tongue, nor the nose, nor the eyes; not space, nor earth, nor fire, nor wind. I am Shiva, pure awareness and bliss.' Tradition says the guru accepted him as his disciple on hearing this answer, which walks the same road of denial as this verse.

To reflect on

If someone asked 'Who are you?', what would you say beyond your name, job and town?
