Meaning

Every day say, 'Come, O six-faced one, guardian of young Valli of the millet fields where cow-elephants and tuskers play!' and eat after giving two handfuls of rice to others. When we, bound by our twofold karma, die, this illusory body will not be seen even as a handful of ash.

Explanation

That not even a handful of ash will remain after cremation is a sharp reminder. So while you live, share two handfuls when you eat and call on Murugan every day: simple, practical advice.

From the Mahabharata, Vana Parva (the Yaksha's questions)

The greatest wonder

At the edge of a forest lake, a Yaksha asked Yudhishthira many questions. One was: 'What is the greatest wonder in the world?' Yudhishthira replied: 'Every day countless beings go to Yama's abode, yet those who remain think they will live forever. There is no greater wonder than this.' Pleased with the answer, the Yaksha restored his brothers to life.
