Meaning

How did I come to have hands that do not fold in loving praise of Murugan: the nephew of Rama who dammed the sea with monkeys; the son of Shiva who wears as ornament the serpent whose eyes serve as its ears; the one who hurled his battle spear till the world of the mighty demons roared and fell?

Explanation

The previous verse was about a head that will not bow; this one is about hands that will not fold. It echoes the Thevaram tradition that every limb not serving the Lord is wasted.

From Ramayana tradition

The squirrel's service

As the monkeys carried great rocks to build the bridge to Lanka, a little squirrel kept dipping in the sea, rolling in the sand and shaking the sand off onto the bridge. The monkeys laughed. Rama lifted it lovingly and stroked its back; tradition says the three stripes squirrels bear today are the marks of his fingers. Even the service of tiny hands is dear to the Lord.

What service could your hands offer the Lord today?
