Meaning

I know nothing but this humble service of praising 'O son of the Lord with the dark-stained throat, O Kanda!' When my learning is gone, when kin, relations and townsfolk wail, when the five familiar senses abandon me and life leaves the body, you are my refuge.

Explanation

At death things fall away one by one: learning, kin, home, the senses. When everything is gone, only the Lord's refuge remains. The small service done in life is the way to it.

From the Mahabharata, Shanti Parva

Bhishma on the bed of arrows

Fallen in the Kurukshetra war, Bhishma lay on a bed of arrows awaiting the sun's northward course. His kin stood around him weeping. His eyes rested only on Krishna. At last, having taught the Vishnu Sahasranama to Yudhishthira, he gave up his life meditating on Krishna. When everything had fallen away, his only refuge was the Lord.
