Explanation

The first sweetness is the nobility of the one who gives. Giving is great not by the size of the gift but by the size of the heart. The second is refusing to live on when dishonour comes, which the book has also said in verses 11 and 13: giving and honour are the two eyes of Tamil ethics.

The third is accepting, rightly and in due measure, the things that bring real benefit. There is no wrong in receiving; the wrong lies in receiving by crooked means, or beyond measure.

Today, generosity in giving, honesty in receiving and honour in every state are what show a person's character.

From the Srimad Bhagavatam (Ninth Canto)

The Charity of Rantideva

From the Srimad Bhagavatam. King Rantideva gathered nothing for himself and gave away all that came to him. Once he and his family went forty-eight days without food or water.

On the morning of the forty-ninth day, a little food made with ghee and milk, and some water, came to them. Just as they were about to eat, a brahmin arrived as a guest, and Rantideva gladly gave him a share. Then a hungry labourer came, and he gave him a share too. Then a man came with his dogs: "I and these dogs are hungry." Rantideva gave him all the food that was left and bowed to the dogs as well.

Now only enough water for one remained, and a man parched with thirst came asking for water. Rantideva said, "I do not want the eight powers or even liberation. My only prayer is to take on the suffering of all beings so that they may be free of pain." Though he himself was dying of thirst, he gave the water away.

Then Brahma, Vishnu and Shiva appeared before him and revealed that they had been the guests. Rantideva asked for no boon; he bowed and fixed his mind on the Lord.

The nobility of the giver is sweet, and Rantideva, who gave away his last drop of water, is its peak.
