Explanation

However countless our efforts to amass wealth, it gathers only as far as fate allows. Listen, people of the world, says Avvaiyar: the riches you see do not stay.

Wealth is like the water of a flowing river, with one person today and another tomorrow.

So while we have wealth we should not be dazzled by it but use it for good, and when it leaves we should not be broken. The only wealth that lasts is dharma.

Mahabharata, Sabha Parva

The Hall of Dice

From the Mahabharata, Sabha Parva. After performing the Rajasuya sacrifice, Yudhishthira shone at Indraprastha with matchless wealth. The palace built by Maya was the wonder of the world.

Envious of that wealth, Duryodhana, with the help of Shakuni, a master of dice, invited Yudhishthira to a game. The game began, and stake by stake Yudhishthira lost it all: gold, elephants, chariots, kingdom, his brothers, himself, and at last Draupadi.

The king whom the whole world had praised a few hours earlier now stood with nothing. In the end the Pandavas had to accept twelve years of exile in the forest and a year of living in disguise.

The wealth gathered by a great sacrifice slipped away in a single day. But their dharma stayed with them even in the forest, and in the end it was that which saved them.

To reflect on

Of all that you have, which kind of wealth would remain even if the rest were gone tomorrow?
