Valmiki Ramayana, Uttara KandaThe Golden Sita
From the Valmiki Ramayana, Uttara Kanda. Rama had taken the vow of having one wife only: the resolve that Sita alone would be his wife all his life. Though it was then customary for kings to marry many wives, he never wavered.
During the time Sita was apart from him, Rama resolved to perform the Ashvamedha sacrifice. The rule was that the wife must sit beside the performer. Even so, Rama took no other wife.
He had an image of Sita made in gold, placed it beside him, and performed the sacrifice. Rama's resolve, keeping Sita alone in his heart even in separation, remains forever the symbol of faithfulness in marriage.
