Explanation

Worse than begging is a life of filling one's belly by flattering and pestering others. Avvaiyar spurns it with a 'Fie!' Rather than lose honour for the stomach's sake, she says, it is far better to give up life.

After speaking of the tyranny of the stomach in the earlier verses, Avvaiyar draws a line here. However strong hunger is, honour stands higher.

The Thirukkural says the same: like the yak that will not live once it loses its hair, the honourable give up life when honour is lost (Kural 969). The resolve that life has no meaning without honour is what raises a person.

Valmiki Ramayana, Sundara Kanda

Sita's Blade of Grass in the Ashoka Grove

From the Valmiki Ramayana, Sundara Kanda. In the Ashoka grove of Lanka, surrounded by demonesses, Sita sat wasted with grief. Ravana came to her in all his splendour. 'I will make you queen above all my queens,' he tempted her. 'All the wealth of Lanka will be yours.'

Sita would not even look at him. She placed a blade of grass between herself and him and answered as if speaking to it: 'I belong to Rama. As light does not leave the sun, I will not leave him. Your wealth cannot buy me.'

Furious, Ravana gave her two months; if she did not yield by then, she would be killed. Sita was not afraid. Over a life of comfort, she chose death with honour.
