Mahabharata, Stri ParvaGandhari's Curse and Krishna's Reply
From the Mahabharata, Stri Parva. When the war was over, Gandhari wept on the battlefield over the bodies of her hundred sons. Her grief turned into anger against Krishna. 'You could have stopped this war if you had wished,' she said, and cursed him: 'In thirty-six years your own clan too will destroy itself like this.'
Krishna accepted the curse with a smile. Then he said quietly, 'Rise, Gandhari, do not drown in grief. The cause of this destruction is the envy and arrogance of your son Duryodhana, and you did not restrain him. You are laying his wrongs on me.'
Gandhari fell silent. That battlefield was the harvest of wrongs sown over many years. An empty pot does not boil over, and an evil seed bears only evil fruit.
