Valmiki Ramayana, Bala KandaBhagiratha Brings Down the Ganga
From the Valmiki Ramayana, Bala Kanda. Through the anger of the sage Kapila, the sixty thousand sons of King Sagara were reduced to ashes. Only if the waters of the Ganga touched their ashes could they find peace. Amshuman and Dilipa tried and failed.
Dilipa's son Bhagiratha did not give up. He performed long, severe penance and won Brahma's boon. Since the earth could not bear the force of the Ganga, he did penance again, this time to Shiva. Shiva caught the Ganga in his matted locks, but she was trapped there, and Bhagiratha prayed once more.
At last the Ganga flowed behind Bhagiratha's chariot and touched his ancestors' ashes. Where three generations had failed, one man's zeal succeeded, and that is why a mighty effort is still called "Bhagiratha prayatnam".
