Valmiki Ramayana, Kishkindha KandaHanuman's First Words
From the Valmiki Ramayana, Kishkindha Kanda. When Rama and Lakshmana came near Mount Rishyamuka, Sugriva was afraid. To find out who they were, he sent Hanuman disguised as an ascetic.
Hanuman bowed, praised their bearing, introduced himself and Sugriva, and spoke most beautifully. Amazed, Rama said to Lakshmana: "No one who had not learned the Rig, Yajur and Sama Vedas could speak like this. There is not a single fault in his speech; it is neither too long nor halting. It would win over even an enemy's heart."
That first conversation was the beginning of the lasting love between Rama and Hanuman. Words spoken pleasingly created a friendship for an age.
