Valmiki Ramayana, Ayodhya KandaThe Son of the Blind Parents
From the Valmiki Ramayana, Ayodhya Kanda. Grieving his separation from Rama, Dasharatha told Kausalya of a sin from his youth. He had the skill of shooting arrows at a target by sound alone.
One night on the bank of the Sarayu, he heard the sound of a pot being filled with water, took it for an elephant, and shot. The one who fell was a young ascetic who had come to fetch water for his aged, blind parents; later tradition calls him Shravana. Even as he lay dying, he only pleaded, "My parents are waiting, thirsty. Take them water."
Dasharatha carried the water to them; when they learned the truth, the parents gave up their lives in grief for their son. That son, who thought of his parents with his last breath, remains forever the image of caring for one's parents.
