Mahabharata, Udyoga ParvaNot Even a Needle's Point of Land
From the Mahabharata, Udyoga Parva. After completing thirteen years of exile, including the year in hiding, the Pandavas asked for their rightful kingdom. Duryodhana refused.
To avert war, Krishna went as envoy and asked, "At least give five villages to the five brothers." Bhishma, Drona, Vidura and Gandhari all pleaded. Duryodhana replied, "I will not give even as much land as a needle's point."
That stubborn will to keep land that belonged to others led straight to the Kurukshetra war. For a needle's point of land, he lost his clan, his kingdom and his life.
