Explanation

Do not speak deceitfully. Hiding an evil purpose inside sweet words is like mixing poison into honey.

Deceitful words may succeed for a while, but when the truth comes out, the speaker loses all his worth.

Adhyatma Ramayana, Yuddha Kanda

The Deceit of Kalanemi

From the Adhyatma Ramayana. In the battle, Lakshmana fell unconscious. Hanuman flew towards the Himalayas to bring the healing herb. To stop him, Ravana sent the demon Kalanemi.

Kalanemi set up a hermitage on the way and sat there disguised as a sage. When Hanuman arrived, he spoke sweetly: "You are tired. Bathe in that pond, then receive a mantra from me before you go." A crocodile lay waiting in the pond.

Hanuman overcame the crocodile, which became a celestial maiden freed from a curse and told him the truth: "That sage is Kalanemi." Hanuman returned and destroyed him. The deceit hidden in sweet words destroyed the deceiver himself.
