Explanation

A turkey watches the forest peacock spread its tail and dance, fancies itself a peacock, and spreads its own unlovely wings to dance. To anyone watching, it is only comic. Avvaiyar says the verse of one who has not studied, but copies the poems of others, is just like that.

What she criticises is not the effort to learn but pretending to be learned without learning. The peacock's beauty is its own nature and cannot be faked. Poetry, music and every art come from long practice.

Today there is much copying of others' dress, speech and writing in search of fame. Far more worthy is to truly learn and find one's own voice.

From the Srimad Bhagavatam

Paundraka, the False Vasudeva

From the Srimad Bhagavatam. Paundraka, king of Karusha, was flattered by those around him: 'You are the real Vasudeva; Krishna is an impostor.' Believing it, he made imitations of all Krishna's emblems.

He had a conch, a discus, a mace and a bow made of wood. He wore a fake Kaustubha jewel and a garland of forest flowers. He even strapped on two artificial arms so that he appeared four-armed, and raised a banner bearing Garuda. Then he sent a message to Krishna: 'I am Vasudeva. You must not bear my emblems. Give them up and surrender to me.'

The court of Dwaraka laughed. Krishna went out to the battlefield and smiled at the sight of Paundraka in his costume. The battle began, and Krishna's Sudarshana discus put an end to the impostor.

However widely the turkey spreads its wings, it does not become a peacock. Dressing up did not make Paundraka into Krishna.

To reflect on

Is there somewhere you have been copying someone rather than learning? What would you need to study to grow your own gift?
