Meaning

For a farmer without oxen, moist soil ready for the plough is a pain, for it goes to waste; to turn and flee when weapons change hands in battle is painful; to rage against the prosperous is painful; and to harm the very powerful is painful too.

Explanation

After the rains there are only a few days when the soil holds just the right moisture for ploughing. A farmer without oxen watches helplessly as that moisture dries away. The line captures the pain of having the opportunity but not the means. The next line holds up to shame the warrior who turns his back and runs just as the weapons clash.

The third and fourth lines turn to attitudes of mind. To rage in envy against the prosperous only wounds oneself. To try to harm those far mightier than oneself is to go looking for one's own destruction.

The Mahabharata is the great example of how envy drives a man into conflict with those stronger than himself until it ruins him. Today too, rather than burning at another's success, it is wiser to learn from it, and to prepare in advance the tools our own opportunities will need.

From the Mahabharata (Sabha Parva)

Duryodhana in Maya's Hall

From the Mahabharata. When the Pandavas built Indraprastha, the asura architect Maya raised for them a hall of wonders, where water looked like floor and floor looked like water. When Yudhishthira performed the Rajasuya sacrifice, kings came from every land to bow before him with gifts.

Duryodhana burned within at the sight of such wealth and glory. Walking through the hall, he took water for floor and fell into a pool; he took floor for water and lifted his robes to wade across dry stone; he took a wall for a door and struck it. Some who saw him laughed, and the humiliation fanned his envy into a blaze.

Back in Hastinapura he forgot food and sleep. "I cannot live while I see the Pandavas' prosperity," he lamented to his father. On Shakuni's advice a game of dice was arranged. That game led in time to the war at Kurukshetra, where Duryodhana clashed with the mighty, with Krishna at their side and Arjuna's bow in their hands, and his whole clan was destroyed.

There is no clearer lesson in where it leads to rage against the prosperous and to harm the mighty.

To reflect on

When another person's success stirs envy in you, what do you do with that feeling?
